Remember those great years the Atlanta Hawks put together in the early 70s? Yeah, me neither. Remember how they dominated the Eastern Conference and scared those western conference teams out of contention every chance they got through fine precision Xs and Os? Yeah, me neither. Remember the one bright spot in the otherwise bored-some and underachieving history of this "Franchise"? Without hesitation you should think of this man...
No, not Russell. Pettit, Bob Pettit. This man was a dominating force in the league long before Kareem came along. Problem for the current Hawks though is that this man isn't going to come walking back through that door. So on that note, we (myself and my fellow Atlantians) are stuck with this current iteration of the Hawks. Not those championship contending St. Louis Hawks of the late 50s, but the #1 overall draft pick juggernauts of the mid 70s.
So here we are, heading just past the midway point of the season and Head Coach William Johnson still has his job, general manager Mr. Karusert still has his job, and the Atlanta Hawks fans still have their battle cry: "We'll compete next year!". Good stuff, good stuff indeed. Problem is, next year is getting closer by the minute, and as of yet this Hawks team is looking like they will remain basically the same when next year does finally roll around. Is this boat sinking yet or did the sprinklers from Coach Johnson's undeserved mansion just spray me in the face? Seriously though, there has to be some changes to this team, or there may be little to no competition for that #1 Draft spot for a few years to come.
