On 9/11/01 I remember it starting out as an ordinary day for me. I was in the Army then and was stationed at Ft. Carson in Colorado. We had our normal morning PT and then went home and then off to training we were having that day in the field. We were on a break in the training when my phone rang and my wife ,who didn't call me when she knew I was training, was on the other end of the line. Thinking something was wrong, never dreaming of what she was about to tell me was going to be the thing that was wrong. She told me that a plane had hit the world trade center. I asked her if she had heard anything on what happened and then she told me that had happened previously and they just announced a second plane had hit the world trade center. She was in a state of shock and nervousness obviously scared to find out I knew nothing about the situation yet, plus not knowing how it would affect me and our family. Well I told her that I would let her know when I found out something. As we hung up almost like it was within seconds the commander's phone rang. Answering it he went off a little ways from where we were and spoke to someone on the other end of the line. After hanging up he called over the company commander and the sergeants to speak with them. He then had us gather around and told us what happened we ended our training at that point. We were told to get prepared to be called into action due to being a medical unit that we might be going to provide medical treatment. We got to go home to our families after what must have been at least 3 or 4 hrs after nothing had come across for our activation.
Sitting at home watching the news seeing the numerous different networks talk about it was something that made things even more demoralizing than it already was. Watching people running as fast as they could from the rubble and debris trying to be one of the fortunate to survive the attack. So many innocent people lost their lives on that fateful day and to realize how special friends and family really truly are. I know that thinking of how I would deal with losing someone in my family would be extremely painful to deal with. I called everyone I had numbers for the first one being my parents knowing that at least I would be able to do that was probably one of the most heartfelt conversations I've ever had and appreciated that I could do just that. Just to be able to tell them I love them mean't the world.
To all the people who lost a family member or friend on that sad and painful day in american history my heart goes out to you and your family on this day of remembrance. To all the men and woman who have served on that day and for any other day for that matter thank you for all that you do and to the sacrifice you make for being able to keep America safe. God Bless you.
