Ok, so I want to get several thoughts out to all of you right now. With the GM draft just a week away, we are coming down to the time when a lot of GMs are trying to get their names out there. That is all well and good, but you should know what you are signing up for, and you should know how I expect GMs to distance themselves from the rest of the pack. So, here goes:
1. I don't know about half of you. That's bad news if you want to get picked, because I'm more likely to choose a mediocre GM that I have past experience with than a good GM that I know nothing about. How do you solve that problem? Tell me about yourself...let me get to know you. In the off topic forum, I put up a template for an "application" that most GMs should do. This is a great way to not only get your name out there, but also to give me a legitimate profile of what you are all about and what you have done. I'm way more interested in your coaching styles, participation levels and past successes than I am in how many posts you can spam on the board in the next week. Posting is good...posting with content and/or style is better.
2. Let me know right now if you don't want to be in the NBA. I know everyone wants in the league, but if you are dead set against being on the NBA side of the board, put it up right now. There are several GMs that exclusively want to play for the ABA, and I'm all for that. But if you get picked for the NBA, you are playing for the NBA...I'm not gonna be swapping GMs anytime soon, so don't ask. I can tell you right now, any GM that gets picked and then backs out is on a permanent ban on my half of the league. I want this league to get off on the right foot, and if you aren't up for it, then its better to speak up now and maybe come in at a later date than mess things up for yourself before we even get off the ground.
3. Once you are picked to the NBA, what team you end up with is at my sole decision. I can honestly say that I know a few of the people that I plan on taking, and I already have a plan for where they are going. Dal and I will be putting GMs on their teams within 24 hours after the GM draft, so there won't be much time for debate or discussion. If you have a preference as to where you want to end up, I'd suggest sending a draft list like you would for a rookie draft. Just because you put a preference doesn't necessarily mean it will change where you go, but I will try to factor it into my decision making process. Again, if you get picked and then back out because you don't like the team you end up with, you are gone for good, at least on the NBA side. Dal might take your bum ass later...
4. I'm gonna play favorites at first. I want to be as honest as possible here, because I think we owe it to each other to be up front. Its a sad but true fact of life...its not what you know...its who you know. I know a few people better with others, and I know who can perform and win titles. This league is all about the battle between the NBA and the filthy, rotten ABA, and championships are the name of the game. I'm going to put guys who I know can win in the best position to do so for the good of the NBA. If I don't know you, now is the time to impress me. Some guys have the inside track, but that doesn't mean they are the best choices...it is your job to convince me that you are the best choice.
5. This is a completely separate entity from any other league you might be in. For the next week, I want to hear all about what you have done and how well you have done it, but once you have your team, all I want to hear about is AvN. I've seen other leagues crash and burn because a few people bicker about another league they are in, and they let it spill into that league. I don't want that to happen here, so I want to nip it in the bud right now.
6. On the same note, I don't want to hear people bashing other leagues either. The friendly comment or exclamation of superiority is fun and all, but I don't want to see a lot of crap thrown at other people. I'm not gonna have this place become a forum for people to bitch about what they don't like about other places. We are a brand new league, and if we want to be respected, we do it by showing the proper respect to others. Any disrespectful bums can find their home on the waiting list, or even worse, stuck on the ABA roster.
Last but not least, if you have any questions, comments, etc, feel free to come to me on AIM or through PM. I work till 11 pm EST during the week, so it might not appear like I'm on much. But I respond to every PM I get, and I'll try to be available in the mornings and on weekends as much as possible. Plus, you can almost always find me on for hours a night after midnight, so if you are up, feel free to hit me up then.
In conclusion, I want this place to be a big success, and I think with the concept we have in mind and GMs we have on board and waiting in the wings, we can make that happen. That being said, I want everyone to know my positions right off the bat so there are no surprises down the line. Good luck to all, and you know where to find me.
